Actual Cancer Researcher Loves the Anime 'Cells At Work!'
By Kasaix • 5 years ago

Cells At Work! is a recent anime on the scene. If you've seen Ozzy and Drix, it's kind of like that, only way more accurate with regards to how the human body works. The series follows a ditzy red blood cell AE3803 and a serious white blood cell U-1146 as they go about their job to keep the human body up and running. And yes, AE3803 is waifu material. All said, it's a great series, both in manga and anime form.

Cells At Work! has found a new fan: Dr. Satoru Otsuka, a postdoctoral fellow in the molecular neurooncology department at Emory University School of Medicine. For people who don't watch House, he deals with cancer.

Dr. Otsuka took to twitter to shout out his love for Cells at Work!, citing how accurate and informative it is. His twitter thread begins here, but I'll sum it up for you fine people. Dr. Otsuka spoke specifically about episode seven of the series, that dealt with cancer. He explained that everything was pretty accurate, and dropped a fact that you just can't unknow, which I won't repeat and let you fine people live happily.

A detail that gets covered in the show, and hardly elsewhere, is that cancer can cause unexpected weight loss, a symptom doctors look for to tackle cancer in its early stages. He goes on to say how "truly grateful" he is for the anime, and how it can actually teach people about medicine and the human body. He suggests that people read the manga, because it's as good, if not better, than a textbook. “You can’t remember with textbooks about living things, but with this, you can remember.” We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
