Street Fighter V Hits Players with Ads

To celebrate a milestone for the game, Capcom is offering a free trial of Street Fighter V, for those who haven't been playing the celebrated game. It starts on Dec. 11 and ends on Dec. 19. As great as that sounds, there's a caveat or two. First, there will be ads. Those ads will stick around in a game players have paid upwards of $60 for. We'll summarize the fail here, but if you want to read it all on their site, click HERE

They're calling it 'Sponsored Content', and it goes live on the Arcade Edition of SF V. Now, ads in games aren't new, take a look at older games, mostly racing games, and those ads were banners for the companies that made the games themselves. Players can turn the ads off, which is great, but having them on offers 'Fight Money', and what that is isn't clear. Ads can appear on stages, during loading screens, or on the characters themselves.

In a game that already costs $60, and the fact that Street Fighter games already sell incredibly well, and that Capcom isn't hurting at the bank, ads just seems like blatant shilling. Ads aren't exactly popular, which is why adblockers exist. I only turn mine off on sites I especially like, or sites that I need to use without adblockers messing something up. So why the ads in SF V? I gotta wonder how many people are actually turning them on. Who doesn't want to see an ad for condoms during their epic battle?
