Famous Manga Authors Who Started Out Drawing Porn: Part 3
By Kasaix • 6 years ago

In the previous two articles, a light was shined upon the ecchi work of legendary manga artists. One doesn't expect the likes of Masamune Shirow to draw hentai, but he did. Did anyone suspect Osamu Tezuka himself of being one of the original hentai artists? His daughter Rumiko was not at all surprised to find those drawings of that anthromorphic mouse girl in his locked drawer. With that said, here are another five famous mangaka who have drawn hentai. This list is in no particular order, it is but a list of manga artists with a flair for the ecchi.

1. Koshi Rikudo

If you've seen the Excel Saga anime, then this comes to no surprise. Excel Saga has its roots in hentai, after all. This much was mentioned as a joke in the Excel Saga anime. He works with the group Rikudoukan and appears to be continuing his hentai work to this day. Rikdo is a graduate of Kyushu Sangyo University and lives in Dazaifu, Fukuoka.

Rikudo's first and most popular manga series is Excel Saga. The series follows the antics of characters Excel and Hyatt working for the evil organization Across. The manga series ran from 1995 - 2011, totaling 27 volumes.

One of Rikudo's more recent works is the noteworthy manga Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn, a series based on a concept developed by Masamune Shirow, following the adventures of the cyborg girl Nene Nanakorobi and her friend Clarion. The series began in 2012 and continues to this day with 9 volumes so far.

2. Akira Akatsuki

Given the tantalizing artwork of Medaka Box, it should come as no surprise that Akatsuki started out in the hentai industry. His most famous contribution to the manga industry is doing the artwork for Nisio Isin's Medaka Box, a very popular series that ran from 2009 - 2013, totaling 22 volumes. The series follows Medaka Kurokami, who, after becoming student council president, institutes a suggestion box. Things escalate from there, with super-powered martial arts tournaments and secret labs.

Another one of his works Luger Code 1951 will be turned into an anime series by Studio Deen. His first work was Z-XL Dai, published in Akamaru Jump in 2003.

3. Ken Akamatsu

Yes, the mangaka behind Love Hina started his work in hentai, drawing an apparently hardcore Cardcaptor Sakura hentai manga.
Akamatsu's first work was called Hito Natsu no Kids Game, published in 1993 and earning the mangaka Kodansha’s Freshman Manga Award.

Love Hina, Akamatsu's most famous work, was published from 1998 - 2001, totaling 14 volumes. It follows the story of Keitarō Urashima and his attempts to fulfill a childhood promise he made to a girl by gaining admittance to Tokyo University. Love Hina is widely praised, appearing not only in manga, but also anime, light novel, and even video game form.
Akamatsu is also the creator of the series Negima, and has received a special thanks in the anime film Hayate the Combat Butler! Heaven Is a Place on Earth.

He was first introduced to anime and manga with the series Sailor Moon. He later applied to Film Study, which may have given him the inspiration for Love Hina. He gained an amount of fame at Comiket under the pen name Awa Mizuno. While still attending Chuo University, he won the Weekly Shōnen Magazine award twice. Soon after he graduated, his Hito Natsu no Kids Game was awarded the coveted 50th Shōnen Magazine's Rookie Award. After his work A.I. Love You gained attention, his popularity hit grand heights with Love Hina.

4. Sakura Kinoshita

This was a mystery to uncover, but the mangaka behind the Loki Ragnarok series has indeed drawn some hentai. Partnered with mangaka Kazuko Higashiyama, the two worked on the series Tactics, published between 2001 - 2013, it follows the adventures of Kantarou Ichinomiya as he deals with magical problems involving demons. Kinoshita and Higashiyama also happened to have collaborated on the yaoi hentai manga of Tactics.

Kinoshita is famously known for the Loki Ragnarok series. The publication itself is unusual, as it was first serialized in Monthly Shōnen Gangan and published by Square-Enix between 2002 - 2003 for 7 volumes. From 2002 - 2004, it was serialized in Monthly Comic Blade and published by Mag Garden in 5 volumes. The story follows the Norse god Loki, who was betrayed and banished by Odin to the human world. There he opens a detective agency to collect evil aura. He befriends the human girl Mayura and faces off against other Norse figures such as Freyr and Heimdall.

5. Kazuya Minekura

Given the art of Saiyuki and and Wild Adapter, it should come as little surprise that Minekura started off writing yaoi hentai manga.

Minekura is best known for her work Saiyuki. The original Saiyuki was published from 1997 - 2002. It followed the adventures of the anti-hero characters Genjyo Sanzo, Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai. It was based heavily on the legendary Chinese tale Journey to the West. It spawned a grand franchise, having a few other manga made, such as Saiyuki Reload, Saiyuki Reload Blast, Saiyuki Gaiden, and Saiyuki Ibun, as well as an anime, video games, and a live action musical.

Minekura's other well-known work, Wild Adapter, clearly shows her love of yaoi. First beginning in 1999 and continuing to this day, it follows the story of Kubota Makoto and Tokito Minoru. The titular Wild Adapter is the name of a drug that turns its users into beasts, shown on one of Tokito's hands.
Wild Adapter continues to spawn new chapters, as well as an alternate universe doujinshi, as well as two OVAs that follow the manga continuity, one of which was released from 2014 - 2015.

Another of her works is known as Stigma, noteworthy for being published in full-color, as opposed to the standard black and white colors typically seen in manga.

In more personal news, Kazuya Minekura has been hospitalized twice for serious and life-threatening operations. She had an illness that affected her writing from 2004–2007, which caused her to have a hysterectomy. On 28 September 2010, she went on Hiatus to undergo surgery for ameloblastoma on the right half of her upper jawbone. On 31 December 2010, she reported her surgery was successful after removing the tumor on her right upper jawbone and is currently resting and being fitted with artificial prosthetics to reconstruct the area where her bones were removed.
