The Steam Game 'Abstractism' Uses Players to Mine Cryptocurrency
By Kasaix • 5 years ago

This isn't a topic we normally cover here at Doujins. We want to make your day better with some ecchi goodness. Whether it be from anime or manga, we want to bring you boobs and boners. That's our job, and we do it really well. However, when something this big comes our way, we feel it's our duty to get the word out and protect you, our friends, the community of Doujins.

It's come to light that a game on Steam known as Abstractism has a hidden, potentially dangerous secret. Players have some claimed that the game installed a virus disguised as a “steam.exe” process along with malware, as seen here. Here are some screen shots that back their claims, along with a video.

So the game was a cover for cryptocurrency mining. Abstractism's heavy use of CPU and GPU was one hint toward this conclusion, which numerous players have been reporting here. The game’s developer, Okalo Union, believed that this was due to players having “high graphics settings” even though the title was a simple platformer that apparently had low system requirements.

A recent news post (seen here) from the developer also added further suspicion as it encouraged that players keep the game running all day for item drops, and to be in-game once the drop limit is reset.

More damning is the developer directly admitting to his misdeeds, though the comment itself has since been deleted:

Ambitious in his misdeeds, this vile developer had been introducing Steam community items to the game that completely replicated the appearance of rare Team Fortress 2 items, causing one player to get scammed in a trade, as seen here:

This Trojan Horse of a game has since been removed, but the damage is done. Who knows how many other games are home to hidden viruses? Be ever vigilant, friends of Doujins! Have those virus and malware scanners at the ready when downloading anything from the internet!
