The Pain Of Watching Seasonal Anime
By WakeUpSnooze • 4 years ago

Man I remember back when I started high school when I wasn’t really deep into the anime game yet. I had just finished hunting down the last Zatch Bell! episodes that never aired on TV, and I was moving on to more mature material like Death Note and Monster. Whenever I wanted to watch an anime, I watched it. And almost every anime I watched was already completed and wrapped up. Then near the end of my high school career I entered the deep dive that can only be described as watching seasonal anime.

Now THIS shit was the power of friendship.

This was the best shit ever at first. You’re telling me I’m watching anime alongside OTHER people? I’m up on all the current anime memes, I’m able to see people discussing and reviewing episodes as they come out, and for the first time I could discover a hype train as it’s being formed rather than finding out after the fact. But then you start to see where you fucked up. High school is a measly four years, and once they’re over you need to start higher education or working. Time get cuts short. It gets harder and harder to manage watching a bunch of seasonal anime at the same time, despite only one episode airing a week. Eventually you start cutting away the shit you don’t like until you are only consuming a handful of anime that you thoroughly enjoy. And then the real trap springs.

You can't shield him from the truth, boys.

“Oh fuck, my favorite shows are gonna end!” Seasonal anime is a harsh mistress. Any anime can discontinue for any reason, sometimes not related to quality in the slightest. I keep seeing talk about Dr. Stone getting a second season to be likely, but I’m still waiting on confirmation. I’ve been cucked before. Regardless, throwing the concept of a second season out the window, it’s unlikely for any particular anime to run until it’s completed with the manga. The vast majority of times you have a bucketful of anime you really like and they all end without a real, satisfying conclusion. Vinland Saga. Beastars. Dr. Stone. All of these anime were so good that I’d want to see them run until completion. However, Beastars seems like the kind of show that won’t be able to, and Vinland scares me in the same way. I would think Dr. Stone is popular enough to be a safe bet due to all the memes I encounter, but we’ll see.
