Say Hello To Fall Anime 2020!
By WakeUpSnooze • 3 years ago

Dun dun dun dun dun...Readers beware…you’re in for a scare. It’s time for fall baby one of the best seasons objectively trust me. And that means it’s time for good ass anime. I hope so anyway. A lot of these have had promising starts so far but we all know that doesn’t mean shit. As always I don’t have time to watch everything so apologies if I don’t mention your new favorite banger, but feel free to enlighten me in the comments!

Higurashi: When They Cry (2020)

Starting off with a spooky anime for a spooky season. Well, in theory anyway. The anime has begun at a pretty slow pace, I’m now three episodes in and almost nothing has been actually scary yet. It seems to be a bit slower than the original anime. Kinky and I went back to check and the older one definitely was moving through plot points fast as fuck. For veterans like us it can feel like these early episodes are taking forever to get anywhere, but for those first-time watchers out there they may be enjoying the slow build up. This may become the definitive way to experience Higurashi depending on how the future episodes take shape. Since it’s been cleared for 24 episodes the anime still has plenty of time for spooky stuff down the road. I just hope it gets there.

Assault Lily: BOUQUET

Nah you fuckers aren’t getting me this time. You tried to lure me in with clean animation for the opening, but I refuse. I skimmed through the first two episodes and I’ve never seen something so generic in my life. I love fights as much as the next guy, well, probably more than him, but these characters were stereotypes of stereotypes and the premise of girls fighting big monsters wasn’t much better.

Munou Na Nana

BOOM BITCH, outta nowhere we got a slam dunk first episode. The twists. The writing. The big brains. This anime was absolutely nowhere on my radar, but I eventually checked it out due to the premise of the main character having to use intelligence to outwit monsters. I got way more than I bargained for and episode two kept me engaged as well. This is the type of anime that is best experienced gone into it knowing absolutely nothing, not even reading the description. I’m a bit scared because stuff like this can get burnt out and leave later episodes feeling weak so I’m hoping it can keep up with the strong foundation it built. Right now this is certainly the dark horse of the season.

Noblesse

I was pretty hyped for this because a lot of people have given it some clout in the past, but man I’m starting to have doubts for this adaptation. The first episode was pretty strong and gave us some surface level insight into a lot of the characters. Then episode two hit and god damn I don’t know why but my investment was declining. I think it’s just a case of “okay we gotta get this show on the road so here’s the entire backstory of this world and this society and these people”. Additionally a lot of characters and plot elements were introduced rather quickly and it feels like I don’t know where to focus my attention. So far we’ve seen a pattern of these WebToon adaptations cutting a lot of content and moving fast so I suspect this is merely a result of Crunchyroll wanting to be speed demons again. I’ll keep watching though I won’t hold my breath for a masterpiece. It’s too early to make a call.

Adachi To Shimamura

Yuri? Actually good yuri? I was hyped as fuck for this anime until I saw the bland ass opening. I sunk in my chair, thinking “surely nothing with an opening like this can be good” and then I saw some reviews. “OMG a masterpiece, romance has never been done like this” “simply brilliant character writing, so relatable” “this shit turned me gay” and I said okay okay okay I’ll fucking check it out. Apparently this was originally a light novel that also got a manga adaptation, however the manga left out a lot of key details and people labeled it as an inferior version. The worry now is that the anime will follow the same path and leave out too many details that it doesn't do the original work justice either. After two episodes I do feel sometimes like “was that all that conversation meant? Was that conversation longer in the light novel?” but I’m still following along with the characters’ thought processes and motivations… for the most part. You can tell that some hard work was put into writing this romance. It’ll just be up to whether the director bothers to include that writing into the anime as more episodes are released.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Saving the best for fucking last baby. I didn’t know what the absolute hell this anime was before watching but I’m already hooked. After Kinky told me that the My Hero Academia author was like “damn that Kaisen shit is pretty good”, I felt a disturbance in the force. My Hero Academia basically took shounen and said “allow us to present Shounen HD Remastered”. And man oh man did I get heavy shounen vibes from the first two episodes. In a good way I mean. The cool sensei, the chill but determined companion, the girl who thinks she’s cooler than she is but will have your back, the gang’s all here. The animation speaks for itself in some of these scenes. It simply looks clean as fuck and manages to have a unique style to it. Watch the opening and you’ll immediately understand what I mean. It’s too early to say anything crazy like Best Of The Season, but if a gun was pointed at my head and I had to bet my life savings on which anime it would be…

Remember everyone these are first impressions so don’t get mad at me if you pick something up and it becomes absolute garbage by episode six. I can only talk about what’s out at the moment. Speaking of which, what anime are you guys watching this season? Do I need to check something out that I missed? Are you having a different reaction to these anime than me?
