Doujins Vs. CGs: A Debate Worth Having?
By WakeUpSnooze • 4 years ago

So there I am, getting ready to hop on over to Doujins.com and have a good time on a Sunday night. I see some new doujins release, but damn there’s a lot of fat ugly bastards in them. Not to mention the fact that there’s none for my favorite tags anyway, so I decided to check back later. But right before I leave, I notice there are some new CGs in town. And at this moment, it hit me: what exactly is a CG set?

Now before we start calling each other the retard word, let me make a case for myself. Every time I’ve ever seen a CG set posted on the site, it was from some hentai game I’ve never heard of. I mean seriously, go search for “CG sets” on this site. The vast majority of the results that come up are labeled that they come from a hentai game. Therefore in the back of my mind I suppose I subconsciously attributed CG to “Computer Game”. I never really bothered to check them out because I already play a ton of hentai games in order to do reviews and I reasoned that it’d be pretty pointless to read them when you haven't gone through the game and don’t know why any of the characters are fucking. I know that’s not useful information for some people looking to jack off, but I’ve read through so many game scenes that I really need something special for me to enjoy it. Anyway, after this recent experience I found out that CG simply stands for “Computer Graphics” and there are actually a ton of original series on the site after all too. It’s not purely related to game content.

Wait so there was an audio CG with no male dialogue? When the fuck was I gonna hear about this?

Time for the real question: how do they stand up to doujins? Well for one, the coloring is fucking refreshing. I personally love when some of my favorite doujins are redone in color and uploaded by some random fans throughout the years. After scrolling through black and white for ages, seeing the rainbow is pretty damn refreshing. Another cool thing is that CGs tend to focus on a guy’s perspective a lot instead of having a male character in a story. It seems like doujins can’t go five fucking minutes without some dumbass guy saying something stupid. Meanwhile in the CG set I’m looking at there’s not an ounce of male dialogue in sight. That’s beautiful man. This isnt’ always the case of course, but the style seems more prevalent.

Thats a dumb title, but man those colors are nice to see.

As for the shit I don’t like, CG sets often tend to have each page as one standalone image whereas doujins usually have a bunch of panels with different scenes happening per page. This lets a doujin give a sense of progression very quickly without making you turn to the next page. CGs on the otherhand can have tons of fucking images, but since each image only presents one scene, they have to keep showing the same scene over and over again while only changing the dialouge and sometimes the expressions. I don't know about y’all, but it gives me major PowerPoint vibes and makes it feel very static when I’m looking at the same/similar image over so many times. And holy fuck that can lead to some high page counts. If you read my doujin length article, you’d know I’m a 30-40 page kinda man. But these things can easily reach the 100 page mark if not higher.

Oh I like this artstyle...oh...197 pages?...Hold on, let me get the popcorn cooking.

Overall, the frequent use of first person perspective and vibrant colors makes a strong case for CG sets, but the higher average lengths and the lack of quick and structured progression that’s typically found in doujins ensures they won’t be beating out doujins entirely in my book. One things for sure though, I won’t be blindly ignoring CGs like I used to.

Do you already read a bunch of CGs? Do you prefer CGs or doujins? I’ll see you G’s in the comments below!
