Cosplaying Kleptomaniac Caught in Evangelion Outfit
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

Last time I checked, the whole idea of cosplay was to draw attention to you, the wearer, emulating the appearance of a popular character. Conversely, there are certain situations one may find themselves in, like robbing a house (a situation I hope you never put yourselves in, mind you), where drawing attention would be the last thing you'd want. But one Japanese man has made a habit out of crossing over these two conflicting notions.

Tetsuya Fujisawa, 37, from Fukuoka, was arrested on account of breaking into a home in Munakata and stealing ¥17,000 cash while wearing what anime fans would recognise as a plugsuit from Neon Genesis Evangelion, specifically that of Rei Ayanami in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Under the skintight suit he wore black tights and one-piece swimsuit for women. Is that what Eva pilots wore beneath their plugsuits? No wonder Shinji didn't want to get in the robot. Have fun getting that image out of your head.

Fujisawa is something of a repeat offender. He was a suspect in ten other burglaries in the area since the beginning of the year and has previously served time for robberies in the past where he was also dressed up. When questioned by police, he said: when I dress up like this, I want to break into people’s houses and steal things.” The only thing Rei stole was the hearts of millions of otaku, and another one of his disguises, namely Spider-Man, is known for bringing robbers like him to justice. Here you can see a news report featuring a display of his outfits confiscated by police as evidence.

If he is arrested again, he will (not) be getting out of prison anytime soon.

What do you think of Fujisawa's case? Who would you (hypothetically) cosplay as if you were to (hypothetically) break into a house? Let us know in the comments.
