About Face: Sony Supports Crossplay for Fortnite
By Kasaix • 5 years ago

First, that's the best header I can find for this topic: Yellow Heart and Black Heart, goddesses from the Neptunia series representing the PC and PlayStation respectively. But I digress.

Second, we normally don't cover games unless there's cute and sexy girls in them. But this, this demanded our attention.

In a completely unexpected move, Sony has announced that it will be supporting crossplatform play as a beta for the game Fortnite. After heralding the PlayStation as the supreme system for games, naming Fortnite specifically, it caved to public demand.

To see the real change in attitude, here's a comment from Sept. 4, 2018:

“On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief.

But actually, we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform.

I think competition is always good. Healthy, fair competition is always good for the industry and growth. I think competition with Nintendo and Xbox is a healthy situation.”

You get all that? Now here's them from Sept. 26, 2018, from their own blog:

"Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution."

You can read the rest on the blog, linked above. It's a hard turn considering their earlier comment. Hopefully this is just the start, and PlayStation gamers can play with their friends no matter what system. Console exclusivity will always be a thing, that's not changing anytime soon, but letting players game together on games that aren't exclusive is a welcome change.

What do you think about Sony's change in attitude? Do you think this is just the start in opening the PlayStation to crossplay for other games like Destiny? Sound off in the comments below!
