4 Western Manga/Anime For RDR Fans
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

It's been almost 2 weeks since one of the most anticipated video games of the year dropped, and gamers have been glued to their screens since. Of course, I'm talking about Red Dead Redemption 2. If you're looking for more gunslinging action in a different medium, and you're able to leave your console for some reading or watching, why not mosey on over to any of these anime/manga series?

Cowboy Bebop (Shinichiro Watanabe)

OK, this one's slightly cheating since its more of a sci-fi than a western, but since its a space western it ticks both boxes. Following the adventures of bounty hunter Spike Spiegel as he travels from planet to planet in search of dangerous criminals along with the crew of his ship, the titular Bebop, there's a reason this series is regarded as one of the best anime of all time. The use of classic western tropes transposed to a sci-fi setting, plus slick action, awesome characters and a great jazz soundtrack make it a must-watch.

Trigun (Yasuhito Nightow)

Another space western, whose anime was released in the same year as, and is sadly overshadowed by, Cowboy Bebop. Trigun follows the exploits of peaceful outlaw Vash the Stampede, who somehow has a bounty of $$60,000,000,000 on his head. Vash is always entertaining  to watch as he goes from lovable goof to sharpshooting badass at the flick of a switch. Most anime can only dream of finding the perfect mix of humour, action and serious story moments, but Trigun has perfected the formula.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run (Hirohiko Araki)

The seventh part of JoJo's is set in an alternate continuity from the first six, meaning you can understand what's going on (relatively speaking) without being familiar with the rest of the series. Set in 1890 America, the Steel Ball Run is a countrywide race endorsed by the president himself. What ensues is a step up in art quality, depth and story compared to the precious instalments, as well as all the weird and wonderful flamboyancy we've come to expect from JoJo

Blaster Knuckle (Shizuya Wazarai)

This underrated manga was created by a school friend of Kentaro Miura, which is why it resembles his earlier work in art and story. But instead of a Black Swordsman, we get a black gunman: Victor Freeman, a former slave/boxer in 19th century America, whose mission is to hunt down the shapeshifting demons that murdered his family and prey on his fellow black folk, using superhuman reflexes and a gauntlet that can fire shotgun shells. In a nutshell, it's BerserkDjango Unchained. What's not to love?

That's it for my suggestions. If you know any other good westerns, Feel free to leave them in the comments.
